How Electro-Deionisation Works

Electro-deionisation (EDI) uses electricity, ion exchange membranes, and resin beds to remove residual ions from water following reverse osmosis (RO) treatment. Feedwater flows through the ion exchange resins, where dissolved salts are removed and directed into a concentrate stream by the applied electrical current. This continuous ion removal process keeps the resin beds in a regenerated state—eliminating the need for chemical regenerants like acids or caustics.

This self-regenerating process ensures uninterrupted operation and consistent water quality, making EDI a reliable and sustainable water polishing solution. Typically, EDI achieves resistivity levels above 12 megohms and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) levels of less than 50 ppb—meeting the stringent demands of pharmaceutical-grade and laboratory-grade water.
