What is a water softener?

A water softener system is a well-established and extremely reliable solution for hard water problems. The water softener units contain an ion exchange resin, which effectively replaces the ‘hard’ salts of Calcium and Magnesium for ‘soft’ salts of sodium, therefore stopping limescale from forming and building up.

‘Hard Water’ or more specifically, water containing high concentrations of dissolved Calcium and Magnesium, is a major problem in applications such as Boilers, Humidifiers, Dishwashers, Washing Machines, and other treated water processes such as Reverse Osmosis, ElectroDeionisation (EDI) systems.

We provide a wide range of solutions to meet the exacting requirements of all applications from a simple ‘cabinet’ style unit through simplex and duplex multi-port valve operation to bespoke turnkey packages.


What is hard water?

When water is referred to as ‘hard’ this simply means that it contains a higher concentration of minerals than ordinary water (these being most particularly calcium and magnesium); the distribution of ‘hard water’ areas is generally linked to local geological conditions. (A map indicating Water Hardness in the UK and Ireland is located in the Technical Library).

The degree of hardness of the water increases, as more calcium and magnesium dissolves.

Hard water not only makes washing with soaps and detergents difficult and costly but when hard water is heated, the calcium and magnesium salts become insoluble, forming limescale on the heat transfer surface.

If this is not dealt with effectively, it can soon incur increased energy costs, acting as insulation, thus reducing the heating or cooling efficiency of affected appliances such as Boilers, Humidifiers, Dishwashers, Washing Machines, and other treated water processes such as Reverse Osmosis and ElectroDeionisation (EDI) systems.

Limescale can also cause increased wear and overheating with potentially disastrous consequences. (See video posted on AWT NEWS).

For this reason, it is paramount that an efficient water softener system is installed as part of any feed water treatment system.

Cabinet Water Softener

Where small volumes of softened water are required on a non-continuous basis, and space is at a premium, a compact cabinet style water softener may offer the perfect solution.

These trim units, supplied within a rotationally moulded cabinet are ideal for ensuring a softened supply to dishwashers, glass washers, laundry equipment and small scale applications in hotels, restaurants, hospitals care homes and other commercial premises.

Water Softeners are generally very reliable pieces of equipment however a small degree of regular attention is required to ensure that they continue to give good service over a long period.

A supply of appropriately graded high purity softener salt will be required for regular top up in the brine bin (for the production of the brine solution used in the regeneration process).

Simplex Water Softener

Simplex Water Softeners are best suited to applications where there is a steady demand for moderate capacities of softened water over the course of a normal working day. Regeneration, during which time no supply to service is available, is then programmed to occur at a time when there is no demand (typically during the night). For this reason, Simplex Water Softeners are normally sized to give at least one days supply of softened water output before regeneration.

The initiation of the regeneration cycle can however also be controlled by water quality or volume produced (i.e. when the service water drops below a pre designated set point, be that ppm of hardness or m3 produced, regeneration will commence); this may be of benefit where treated water storage tanks are available to hold sufficient capacity to manage usage whilst the unit is temporarily out of service.

  • Laundry facilities
  • Commercial Glass & Dishwashing installations
  • Low usage boiler feed

Duplex Water Softener

Duplex softeners are ideal for sites with varying water demand or for applications where a continuous and uninterrupted supply of softened water is required. The twin vessel configuration allows for one resin vessel to always be in service whilst the other is in regeneration or standby thus guaranteeing 24/7 soft water production.

The initiation of the regeneration cycle can be controlled by time clock, water quality or volume produced.

  • Timer-controlled units tend be work best when daily soft water requirement is relatively constant, the units then being set to regenerate when general consumption low.
  • Meter controlled models are ideal when daily water requirements are variable. Having sized the water softener correctly, the regeneration cycle occurs when the set capacity for producing soft water is reached (this is particularly useful when water and salt consumption must be kept to an absolute minimum)
  • Where a specific water quality is consistently required, initiation of regeneration by output quality creates a safeguard ensuring that supply to service will always meet production requirements.
